Luca (2021) Discussion

For the PIXAR film being released this summer.

The cover of the artbook has been revealed:

I believe I have seen that image prior. It's a great choice for the artbook.

It's very similar to the poster. I guess this is the concept art version. That's probably why you find it familiar. It's a great concept though, so I like that they used it for the artbook as well.

As you may have heard, it has been announced that, just like Soul and unlike Raya and the Last Dragon, Cruella or Black Widow, Luca will premiere exclusively on Disney+ at no extra charge.

Luka is the Pixar movie I've been most interested in since Toy Story 4. Very glad it will be available for free.

People are describing Luca as charming and a love letter to Italy, and are especially praising the visuals, the humor, Jacob Tremblay's performance, and the friendship and chemistry between the two leads. There's only one critic who's not impressed with the film so far. It's the last reaction on the link.

The last one shows that Ercole, the film's villain, has two friends. I guess one of them is the boy who was with him in the trailer. They don't seem to have too good intentions in this image. Also, Giulia is carrying something behind her bike; I wonder what it could be. And judging by the book he's holding, it seems Luca is interested in astronomy, right?

• Animation on the film has finished. This is the first Pixar film animated completely from home, right? If I'm not mistaken, most of the animation on Soul was made before lockdown.

• According to Matthew Melloni, the former editorial director of The Hollywood Reporter, Luca's and Soul's moves to Disney+ have been demoralizing for Pixar employees.


• According to the director, there are no current plans of releasing a short alongside Luca.

This is the first original Pixar movie I've been excited about in a long time now.

I'm really excited for it too.

For me, the appeal is the setting (I definitely get Call Me By Your Name vibes like just about everyone else on the Internet), plus the underwater transformations considering The Little Mermaid is my favorite movie. It is a pity they wouldn't go as far as making it a romance between the two boys (I thought at first that one of them would be human).
